Environmental Policy

Last reviewed: 3 April 2025 · Next review: 3 April 2026

Mission Statement

Cubo Work recognises that the environment is important to our organisation, our staff and our users. Of particular significance is the climate and ecological emergency. We recognise the wide-ranging effects of climate and ecological breakdown and will work hard to ensure that consideration of these effects is embedded both in the way we run our business and the operations of our sites.

We recognise our responsibility to manage our environmental impacts carefully, including meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our organisation strategy and operating methods, with regular review points. We will encourage staff, users and other stakeholders to do the same.

Objectives, Targets and Priority Actions

1. Reduce our carbon footprint (Scopes 1, 2 & 3)

Targets

  • 36% reduction in carbon intensity (CO₂e per £m turnover) of location-based Scope 1 & 2 combined — by 2029-30
  • 96% reduction in carbon intensity (CO₂e per £m turnover) of market-based Scope 1 & 2 combined — by 2029-30
  • 65% reduction in carbon intensity (CO₂e per £m turnover) of Scope 3 — by 2029-30
  • 64% reduction in carbon intensity (CO₂e per £m turnover) of total emissions — by 2029-30
  • Measure and report carbon emissions annually, including Scope 1, 2, and 3.
  • Implement carbon reduction strategies in line with business growth.
  • Encourage lower-carbon commuting and travel options.
  • Support staff in making informed choices on home energy and work-related emissions.
  • Given the planned scale of growth in the business, our carbon emissions will grow in absolute terms. We will continue to report our absolute emissions transparently on an annual basis.

2. Improve energy efficiency and transition to renewable energy sources where possible

Targets

  • 11.4% reduction in energy intensity (kWh per £m turnover) by 2029-30
  • Optimise heating, cooling, and lighting systems to minimise energy use.
  • Select energy-efficient office spaces and engage with landlords to improve building performance.
  • Transition to 100% renewable electricity where viable.
  • Promote energy-saving behaviours among staff in offices and home working environments.

3. Minimise waste generation and ensure responsible resource use

Targets

  • 40% of waste generated to be recycled by 2029-30
  • Apply the waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
  • Improve waste segregation and recycling across operations.
  • Work with suppliers to reduce packaging and prioritise recycled content.
  • Extend the lifespan of office equipment and furniture through reuse, refurbishment, and responsible disposal.

4. Reduce water consumption and encourage responsible water use

Targets

  • Implement water monitoring systems in all sites by 2029-30
  • It has not yet been possible to gather reliable water usage data from our premises. Estimates have instead been made based on benchmarks. Through our target, we will seek to address this data issue, to enable future consumption target-setting.
  • Implement water-saving measures in office spaces where possible.
  • Engage with suppliers to understand and improve water efficiency in the supply chain.
  • Provide employees with guidance on reducing water consumption at work and home.

5. Reduce emissions from business travel and commuting

Targets

  • Avoid absolute growth in emissions from staff travel
  • Encourage remote collaboration to minimise unnecessary travel.
  • Promote sustainable commuting options such as cycling, walking, and public transport.
  • Transition company vehicles to electric or low-emission alternatives.
  • Implement a travel policy that prioritises sustainability.

6. Embed sustainability into business operations and empower employees

  • Appoint a senior leader responsible for environmental sustainability.
  • Provide staff training on carbon literacy and sustainable practices.
  • Foster a sustainability-focused workplace culture.
  • Maintain transparent reporting on environmental performance.

7. Go beyond regulatory requirements to drive wider environmental benefits

  • Support environmental initiatives and organisations.
  • Ensure financial practices align with sustainability values (e.g. ethical banking and pensions).
  • Actively engage customers and stakeholders in sustainability efforts.
  • Continuously review and improve environmental strategies.

Governance and Engagement

We have developed a detailed action plan to ensure delivery of the objectives and targets above. Responsibility for each action within that action plan has been assigned to an appropriate person. Timescales for delivering each action have also been assigned and these will be kept under review.

We are committed to reviewing and updating progress against our action plan on a quarterly basis.

All staff will be made aware of our environmental objectives, targets and actions, as well as any related policies or procedures. We will also seek to routinely identify any training needed to facilitate delivery of this policy and to meet those needs wherever this is feasible.

Our Environmental Management System

This environmental policy and our environmental action plan, alongside any other related policies, procedures and monitoring, comprise our Environmental Management System (EMS). Our EMS is certified by Green Small Business. Our certification is maintained through an annual review of our action plan carried out independently by Green Small Business.

We will update this policy at least annually in consultation with staff and other stakeholders where necessary.
